Maturing methanation technology enables gas system decarbonization

Groningen, Netherlands, 13 December 2019 – DNV GL, the world’s largest resource of independent energy experts, is today launching, together with Gasunie and Gasterra, a comprehensive overview on methanation technologies and commercially available systems. Methanation is a conversion technique used for converting hydrogen or syngas into gas-grid quality methane. The document shares theoretical, operational and commercial information on methanation technology and systems. With this report the authors aim to stimulate and support further technology development and accelerate de-carbonisation of the natural gas system.

Gas produced from sustainable sources such as wind and solar, can play an important role in decarbonising the energy system. Whether it is biomethane produced from biomass gasification, hydrogen produced by electrolysing renewable power or biomethane from anaerobic digestion, methanationis a crucial technology as the last step in the value chain from renewable sources to grid-injectable biomethane.

With Europe as frontrunner in introducing renewable gases into the market, recently, significant progress has been made in developing various gasification and methanation technologies, strengthen the growth of grid-injected biomethane production. A growing number of experimental and demonstration installations is in operation already and new developed systems are moving towards mature levels.

The new report provides an up-to-date overview of all basic chemical and biological methanation technologies and discusses the relevant technical aspects of methanation systems. Furthermore, the report presents a longlist of methanation projects and technologies. A set of manufacturer-specific fact sheets present detailed technical and commercial information.
