With the entry into force of the Ballast Water Management Convention on September 8th 2017 attention will now turn towards the actual installation of the chosen ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) onboard the vessels. Ballast water treatment systems are intended to eliminate unwanted organisms being transported around the world and causing potentially serious ecological, economic and public health consequences in the receiving environments. BWTS are a relatively new technology and there is little data available from long-term operational experience with such systems.

DNV GL offers both Class and Advisory services to support shipowners and manufacturers with decisions that need to made relating to BWTS. A dedicated webpage has been available for some time and we have now developed a decision-making tool that helps ship owners choose the system most suitable for their ship and, most importantly, supports them in avoiding costly systems which are not compliant. For more information on this tool, please email us.

Maritime Academy will also dedicate the next Smart Up to this topic. Join us for this free webinar on Tuesday September 26th at 10.00 am CEST or 4.00 pm CEST. You will have the chance to pose your questions to the DNV GL experts presenting this Smart Up.

This Smart Up will highlight common ballast water technologies and provide some background on each. It is a recommendation to the industry to start planning the retrofit onboard.

Our main speaker for this Smart-Up is Liliana Castro, Senior Engineer, Environmental Protection, DNV GL Maritime.

All those who register will be given access to Maritime Academy’s e-learning platform where a recording of the Smart-Up can be watched again whenever needed.
