Hull Structure Course

In a world here the acceptance for hull damages and accidents goes down, there is an increasing need for
high quality shipping operations. There is a demand for improved inspections and for better maintenance of
the ships. This can only be obtained through improved knowledge among the individuals responsible.

In order to meet these needs, DNV has developed the Hull Structure Course. The course will increase your understanding of the structural configuration and response of ship structures.

Target Group:
• Technical Managers
• Fleet Managers
• Superintendents

Training objective:
The purpose is to improve the quality of your hull inspections and improve your ability to evaluate the criticality of structural defects. During a 2 to 4 day course you will learn about the basic functions of a ship’s hull. Through the course, you are introduced to the basic strength theory in a way that is simple but suitable for understanding the structural response of complex ship structures. Ship-type specific modules discuss structural functions and typical hull damages related to the ship-type of your interest.

Course agenda:
The course comprises a one-day

session covering:
• basic hull strength and loads,
• simple beam theory,
• structural connections in a ship structure and
• hull structure failure types such as cracks /fatigue, buckling, indents and corrosion.
In addition, one or more of the following one-day ship-type modules may be included.
• Oil Tankers
• Bulk Carriers
• Container Ships
• LPG Carriers

The one-day ship-type specific modules cover structural build-up and function of the
• hull structure,
• cause of typical damages,
• consequence of damages and
• proposed repairs.

You may choose any combination of these ship-types to tailor-make the course based on your needs.
