By introducing STCW-95 and ISM Code, IMO showed its concern for Organizational and Human Resources aspects of ship management. More recently, also OCIMF dedicated special attention to this factor when releasing the TMSA Program.
In this course we introduce a practical tool to improve personnel management based on the identification and profiling of the most effective behavior of individuals and teams in the performance of critical tasks. This risk-based tool, called “Competency Management” forms the backbone of the entire process of identification of function profiles, recruitment, selection, familiarization, evaluation, training and promotion of personnel. This course is an element of the triangle: Incident Analysis, Risk Assessment and Behavior Management.
Target group
• Top Management, involved in Strategic decisions, and HR/Crewing Managers,
• Line Managers (both shore-based and senior ship-board staff).
Training objective
• Obtain a better insight in the interdependence between the organization elements in the own organization.
• Obtain a better insight in key factors needed to motivate individuals and teams and to build up/maintain a desirable company culture.
• Improve insight in the culture-bound behavior characteristics of seafarers.
• Be able to evaluate existing company policies in relation to the principles of Competency Management, the TMSA guidelines will be referred to.
• Be able to apply modern Competency Management in the own organization.
Course agenda
The course comprises a two-day session covering:
• Human failure and human performance,
• Organizing: introduction to the 7-S model of Mc Kinsey (Strategy, Systems, Structure of the Organization, Style of management, Staff, Skills and Shared Values),
• Managing Cultural differences: the 5 dimensions of national cultures,
• Competency Management in practice
Practical experience in a role of Leadership on board or ashore.
