Ballast water management

Summary
The unintended spread of organisms by ballast water carried by ships and the associated
risks is considered one of the major threats generated by shipping. IMO has developed a
convention, which shall regulate these aspects in the future but the process of adoption by the
flag states is going slowly. In the mean time a couple of treatment technologies have been
developed but only a few of them are ready to use. Ballast water management has an impact
on design, construction and operation of ships, which will be discussed by experts from DNV.
