Introduction to maritime environmental management
systems (ISO 14001)Management
Based on knowledge of the key environmental aspects of the maritime industry the benefits of
an Environmental Management System (EMS) will be highlighted. The participants will be familiarized with the structure of an effective EMS being in line with the requirements of
ISO14001. It will be shown, how the EMS can be integrated into an existing Safety Management system of the shipping company.
Important success factors and typical pitfalls when implementing an EMS will be discussed and the ISO 14001 certification process will be
discussed with focus on shipping companies and ships. It is anticipated that the course participants are familiar with safety management principles,
possess basic knowledge of environmental impacts from shipping activities and have experience from leading roles in the maritime industry.
