Working at heights can be a dangerous task. Not only for the workers that do the job, but also for colleagues assisting these workers and for the people working on levels beneath.

In light of these risks, DNV has developed competence standards for all scaffolding personnel and inspectors of (portable) scaffolds and ladders. Specifically for the Expert Supervisor Scaffolding, DNV operates a certification scheme acknowledged by the Dutch labour safety -regulations.

DNV offers certification of competence in compliance with the following standards:

  • Safety Assessment Scaffolding, Basic – Competence: The certificate holder is competent to perform a visual assessment of the scaffolds with regard to its safety, usability, functionality, and is also able to recognize dangerous situations.

  • Safety Assessment Scaffolding, Advanced - Competence: The certificate holder is competent to perform inspections of non-complex scaffolds (with a maximum height of 24 metres, steel and/or aluminium, fixed and/or rolling) and is authorised to release them for use.

  • Scaffolding Inspector - Competences: The certificate holder is competent to perform inspections of standard and complex scaffolds (steel and/or aluminium) and is authorised to release them for use.

  • Assisting Scaffolder - Competences: The certificate holder assists the scaffolders with regard to the selection of material, transportation and (de-)construction of scaffolds and supporting constructions, under supervision of an Advanced Scaffolder.

  • Basic Scaffolder - Competences: The certificate holder is competent to (de-)construct and modify scaffolds, under the supervision of an Advanced Scaffolder or Foreman Scaffolding.

  • Advanced Scaffolder - Competences: The certificate holder is competent to (de-)construct and modify all types of scaffolds under the supervision of a Foreman Scaffolding.

  • Foreman Scaffolding - Competences: The certificate holder is competent to lead and supervise groups of scaffolders when (de-)constructing and modifying all types of scaffolds.

• Inspection of portable climbing material (Ladders and stepladders)
• Inspection of Rolling scaffolds (Rolling towers)
• Expert Supervisor Aluminium Rolling Scaffolds (Rolling towers)
• Expert Supervisor Rolling Scaffolds (Rolling towers)
• User of suspended platform system
• Installing and maintaining suspended platform system

The examination organisation that is authorised by DNV to conduct the above mentioned certification examinations is International Quality Consultancy (IQC), located in Goes (The Netherlands). IQC also facilitates examinations outside The Netherlands.
